Vail School District

The Vail School District covers far more than the town of Vail. It serves Vail, all of Corona de Tucson, and large parts of southeast Tucson including Rita Ranch, Civano, Rocking K, Saguaro Trails, Sierra Morado, La Estancia, and Rancho del Lago. The boundary extends southeast along the I-10 corridor nearly to the Pima County line, taking in rural areas such as J-Six Ranchettes.

By the measures Arizona actually publishes, yes. The Arizona State Board of Education gave Vail an “A” in the most recent letter-grade cycle with a district GPA of 3.81, tying it for second in the state among districts operating ten or more schools. Niche ranks it the #2 school district in Arizona and #1 in the Tucson area. Corona Foothills Middle School has been Arizona’s top-rated regular middle school four years running, and Empire High School earned a National Blue Ribbon award in 2025. Individual schools still vary, so compare campuses rather than relying on the district average.

The district counts 22 schools serving roughly 15,000 students. That includes seven elementary schools, four K–8 schools, four middle schools, seven high school and K–12 options, and an inclusive preschool operating on two campuses. Published counts range from 22 to 25 depending on whether the preschool campuses and online programs are counted separately.

Quite possibly. A large share of Vail School District homes carry Tucson, AZ 85747 mailing addresses and sit inside Tucson city limits — Rita Ranch, Civano, and the Mesquite, Esmond Station, and Senita Valley areas among them. The reverse also happens: some Vail 85641 addresses are far out the I-10 corridor. A mailing city and ZIP code tell you nothing reliable about school district assignment. Verify the specific address with the district.

Do not rely on a listing’s school field or a rating website — both are frequently out of date, especially after the 2025 boundary change.

Since November 2025 the district uses true attendance boundaries for its two comprehensive high schools. Mica Mountain High School serves Civano, Saguaro Trails, Sierra Morado, Mesquite Ranch, Rincon Foothills Estates, Rocking K Estates and the original Rocking K neighborhood, Desert Willow Estates, and Jumping Cholla. Cienega High School serves Rita Ranch, La Estancia, Desert Stone, Vista Montana, the new Rocking K development, Sycamore Park, and all neighborhoods not assigned to Mica Mountain. Empire, Andrada Polytechnic, Vail Academy, and Vail Innovation Center are schools of choice with no boundary, open to any in-district student.

Yes. Vail accepts both out-of-boundary transfers and out-of-district open enrollment. In-district students are placed first, and out-of-district families are placed only if space remains after that. When demand exceeds capacity the district holds a lottery, and high school transfers are explicitly not guaranteed. Applications generally open around November 1 for the following school year. One thing to budget for: beyond 1.5 miles, busing is provided only if you live inside that school’s attendance boundary, so an out-of-boundary seat usually means you are driving.

Yes, and it has. The district redrew its high school boundaries in November 2025 to relieve enrollment pressure, and it has adjusted boundaries before as growth demanded. Students already enrolled were grandfathered and transportation was continued an additional year, which is the pattern to expect — but no school assignment is permanent. If schools are the reason you are buying a particular home, verify the current assignment in writing during your inspection period and treat future years as subject to change.
